You've seen it a million times. You type in the URL of a specific page on a website that you want to see, and for one reason or another (maybe you didn't spell it in correctly) the server can't find the exact page you are looking for.
The standard 404 Error page - "404 Error. File not found" - which has been around for ever - is far from helpful to the user.
But now designers and programmers are not only getting creative with "The 404", they're getting smarter with it as well.
Back in July Smashing Magazine held a call for entries to determine the most creative and effective, use of the 404. The top 40 entries were posted on the Smashing Magazine site last month and they are all terrific. If you work in interactive marketing, it's a "must see."
