Back in April I wrote a quick blog post about Jon Doucette's eco-friendly color
palette which saves energy by reducing the wattage a computer uses to display the web page. The idea is fairly simple - the brighter the colors on a web page, the more energy your computer uses to display them. If you're Google, multiply that by hundreds of millions of views.
Today Core77 writes about Blackle, a grassroots created Google powered search page that is all black (as opposed to white) and thus as more people use it, more energy across the globe is saved.
As of this morning 114,704.259 Watt hours have been saved by using Blackle rather than Google.
Marc,
While I like the idea, I wonder if more should be made about people who leave their computer on while away? Many people in my office for example leave their computers on when they leave for the day. Whether sleeping or just on. It seems like the wattage wasted by that would eclipse that of the display colors.
Not taking away from the idea, which is a good one, but thinking about that person that uses blackle and then leaves his cpu on overnight when not around.

Hi there Hyperempowered folk, I'm afraid the Blackle thing isn't true. I fell for it too if that's any consolation.
See the comment on my post...
